DEBUNKING ACTIVITY
"What's That Noise?"
Lots of houses make weird noises. The sources of these seemingly 'Ghostly' noises can usually be explained as very common effects of 'Natural' household noise.
One source is usually blamed on ghosts, and that is the effects of temperature. Heat and cold cause expansion in most materials. This can account for creaking floors and walls, tinkging pipes and duct work, moving pipes, and a whole host of other noises. There is also at any given time a dramatic temperature difference between the inside and outside of a home or building. This difference can cause windows to expand and contract causing noises as well.
There are allot of systems in the home that function on their own. If you aren't directly involved with the operation of these various pieces of equipment, the noises they make can be strange or unfamiliar to you. Explore the different types of systems in the home, you may find their operation is the cause of any 'Noises' you might be experiencing.
Houses settle, new and old. This process never stops. Like a 'Growth Spirt', a house can enter a period of settling and cause it to become more noisy for a period of time.
Every home has drafts, some more than others. A breeze can be the source for some activity, weather it's a closing door, a moving curtain, or other activity, check to see if it's just manipulation by wind or draft. This also accounts for many 'Cold Spots' blamed on 'Ghosts'.
Sometimes people experience strange lights, or other optical anomalies. Be sure it's not a reflection of car headlights coming in the window, or another light source bouncing off something else to produce a reflection.
Allot of homes have central heating by forced hot air. This type of heating system interconnects rooms via a duct system. This system can cause voices and other noise to travel about the house through the ductwork. The distance traveled and the material used in the ductwork, can distort voices and sounds as well, giving them a 'ghostly' sound quality. These vents also expand, as well as expel, forced air which can cause temperature differences, and move light objects. It can even give the sensation of being touched. Know where your vents are, and check them for these issues. There are usually return air vents as well.
